Rhythm with Igor
Perform
Today, we are going to practise our rhythm by playing with Igor the Octopus! Let's divide the class into red, blue, yellow and green groups.
We need to find instruments or sounds to match the symbols below. An "s" could be a simple vocal sound or it could be a shaker or tambourine that sounds like an "s". The "t" could be a vocal sound, or it could be any short percussive sound, like tapping the table with a pencil or hitting a hand drum.
The circle and triangle could be any sound you choose! Which instruments or sounds can we use in the classroom today?
Once we have our sounds and instruments, let's play with Igor! Make sure the sound is turned up so we can feel the pulse.
Compose
Now we can create our own composition for the class to play. We can use any of the symbols for any of the colour groups. We can also just use the circles to fill in the boxes and follow our colours.
Let's get a volunteer from each group to fill in one box. It's a good idea to leave some of the boxes empty. These are called rests!
If you want to make things more tricky, you can add or take away symbols as the piece is being played!
Perform
Since we have the instruments out and we are working on our rhythm, let's try a different type of piece with Igor.
Listen carefully to Igor's rhythm and follow the coloured pebbles. Make your sound when the pebbles reach the bottom. Turn the volume up!
